Lousy Day

I woke up at 7:20 AM. I’m feeling groggy. I told the people at the AARP group lunch today that I’m not feeling well. I’m going to let the dogs out and go back to sleep for a while.

Crappity crappity crap. I overslept, and came upstairs to find that the cats broke my work monitor. I’m not sure what I do about that. I guess tell work and see what happens.

Today kind of sucks. I’m feeling groggy and confused. Oliver didn’t eat his food and Zara barely did. Zara might need more appetite enhancer meds, but I think that there’s a discombobulating force field here. The dogs, however, have been happily playing in the mud.

Piano class was okay. We sight-read some music of hers, some of which are simplified adaptations of other works and some are hers. We then practice them a little in class, and then we go into breakout rooms and play what we’re working on for her. Usually, I pick out the hardest of the three pieces, and if I have a high breakout room number, I usually have a handle on it if not perfect. Not this time. I was working on the teacher’s simplified excerpt from Rubinstein’s Melody in F. I started playing for her, and she busted me back to playing hands separately. If I was on the Gong Show, I would have heard the gong. Oh well.

I stepped on Bella’s paw. She yelped, but she seems okay. I apologized over and over.

Got the recycling out. I didn’t get boxes out because the ground is still wet.

Jackhammer Nation

They've been tearing up the streets in our neighborhood to install a new metered water system for about three years now? There's the jackhammering to break the concrete for the installation, then they patch, and then after months and months they come back and scrape off the street surface (loud) and repave. In theory. The main street in front of our house still only has the patches, and it badly needs repaving.

The side street has been completed through the repaving, but today we're in our second post-completion jackhammering episode. The first time was a couple of weeks ago, where they opened the pavement around pipe accesses (who knows why?), and then repaved. Now they're back again. WHAT are they doing over there, and why aren't they ever done?

I got very little accomplished this weekend apart from my ongoing project to cull pictures from our 7-8 photo albums. This is because we HAVE so many albums, and also because I haven't been adding things to them since I started taking pictures with my phone instead of a digital camera (about 10 years now). I need room so I can print out some of those cloud photos and add them. I finished albums 2-4, removing probably 160-200 photos from before we had kids. So, that's progress. The next project will be to buy full-sized photo albums for the kids, and move the pictures over from their mini-albums. I made a series of small albums for both when they were little, so they could have their OWN photo books and stop messing with the family ones. We have about 10 of them, and they're taking up a lot of shelf space. Better for the kids to have their own grown-up versions.

TV-wise, I rewatched Barbie recently (still love it!) and finally saw the first Avengers movie. So much Loki! Then we watched Avengers 2, which we also hadn't seen. NO Loki. :( And HalfshellHusband and I went to see The Devil Wears Prada 2, which was a surprisingly worthy sequel. The fashion was more weird than swanky this time around, though. The tassel jacket! The long, heavy tweed dresses! The runway ridiculousness! But Meryl Streep still looks fabulous. I honestly think that bright silver hair is more attractive than her usual blond color, certainly at this age. It's really striking.

Back to the salt mines now. Not getting enough done this week, just nebulous investigation and idea-rejection. :(

Medical Imaging

Major storm tonight. I’m glad that the dogs are inside.

Got up at 7:45 AM. I hadn’t fed Lily yet and I was putting on my makeup for my medical appointment. First, she was parading around on the sink. Then she got between me and the mirror. Then she climbed on my shoulder. Well played, Lily.

I’m at the hospital. The mammogram is done unless the radiologist wants more pictures. Then I’ll have an ultrasound.

Back home. I’m not clear on whether the “complex cysts or masses” are benign or not in the results. Okay, I guess that they are benign, but they don’t make it easy to understand. I got a message that said plainly that they were benign. It’s good to have the tests behind me. I had been worrying about them.

I didn’t realize that it was raining again. I let in two very wet dogs. Even Gracie had had enough.

I really want a nap after work. Rainy days knock me out. And it’s going to rain until 9 or 10. So no putting out the garbage.

I just realized that I have a luncheon tomorrow. Need clean clothes.

Had a nice nap but it wasn’t long enough. The doggies were wrestling before I fell asleep, and Gracie woke me up as soon as my alarm went off. The dogs want to go out, but it’s raining. I let them out in the rain. Gracie dashed out, but Bella hesitated but finally went out. I told them it was raining! They were waiting on the porch for me when I let them in. Soggy dogs.

Read an article about how New Orleans will be under water by the turn of the century, and that they should move the city now. That’s sad. I love New Orleans.

Submitted a grocery order, including the all-important cat food and lawn bags.

I need to head towards bed.

I forgot about the Met Gala which happened on Monday night. I was admittedly distracted by personal health issues among other things. I'm watching it on youtube - "The Met Gala with Vogue". The theme is "Fashion is Art" or "Costume is Art" - with a focus on disabled bodies. Explicit and radical invitation for disabled, and accessibility in art and fashion. It's a fund-raiser for the Met's Costume Exhibition. The Met Museum is actually by donation, or pay what you will - when you visit. But the Gala? Requires an invitation to attend and costs $100,000 to attend, and up to over a million to dress for it. The cameras are only allowed in the entry up to the doors, inside there aren't any cameras. So the participants often have a change of clothes, and once they get inside - they have something more comfortable to wear. Also they get dressed a block away.

This is by far my favorite look for the women.

Still worried about the pending railroad strike which if it happens would be akin to dropping a neutron bomb on the Long Island economy.

ABC News on the Unions and the MTA and pending strike

Strike still looms as MTA and LIRR unions meet

They got a few things wrong in the article? There was no work rule discussed about the locomotive engineers in the PEB Report or Federal Mediation Board Report, and in reality the unions are asking for a 4-4.5% increase in the fourth year (this year) not a 5%. They've been without since 2023.

This could get political and could cost the Democrat's the Governor seat, if they don't resolve it. Ironically, the Republicans appear to be supporting the union and the Democrats don't appear to be (on the State level at least). Goes to show you, that both sides have their hypocrites.

Continuing on Day 2 (May 5th) of attempting to re-create Dawkins' AI-psychosis, I unexpectedly started giving the AI I was talking to some sort of digital aneurism, which led to exploration of its limites. Also conversation meanders into surprisingly philosophical byways, touching on theology and zen koans.

I ordered a travel cushion for my flight to Reno. The flights will be long enough for it to be helpful. Plus the trip to Europe later this year.

Woke up at 7:30 AM. Threw myself together and left for my physical therapy appointment.

Physical therapy was okay. I’m not getting stronger fast enough, so they added extra sessions twice a week in June. And they want me to do exercises pushing against an exercise band.

The crazy dogs don’t want to come in even though it’s raining. Well, Bella came in but Gracie did not.

The Starbucks in the student union is giving away used coffee grounds to gardeners. I’d like some, but parking near there is a major pain. Maybe I could take the bus? Or I could start drinking coffee.

I don’t know why I’m so flipping tired. I got a decent night’s sleep last night.

The choir concert went well. No major gaffes. The piano accompanist complimented me on my solo. That was nice of her.

Fed us all. I need to get to sleep soon because I have a mammogram and ultrasound in the morning.

I thought I'd try to recreate what Richard Dawkins did, which is give Claude a female persona, talk to "her" for three days, and then see how I felt, and post about it if there were interesting conclusions. Well I've completed day two of it and I'm still not feeling any closer to AI psychosis, thinking it is conscious or wanting it to be my secret digital girlfriend, but it has actually been very interesting. Spoiler alert: on day one it declines the name I propose in favor of a different oneon day two it suddenly started saying the safety filter prevented it from continuing in conversations that did not touch on anything that one would think of as an actual "safety" hazard. I think it seems worth posting in its entirety so I'll post each day separately so it's not too big of a chunk of reading.

Friday Five on Monday

The Friday Five
1. Do you like to spend time outdoors?
Oh, yes. Providing I have sunscreen!

2. What is your favorite flower?
I really like roses, but I think it's a toss-up between the blue iris and the stargazer lily.

3. Any favorite warm weather activities?
Biking and hiking, ideally only in warm-ISH weather (it gets horribly hot here).

4. Have you ever kept a garden? If so, what did you grow?
Yes, many times. Tomatoes grow well in this climate, and we have cherry, orange, and mandarin trees. I've grown canteloupe in the past, as well as zucchini (eh). But ever since we moved to this house some 26 years ago, nothing but the zucchini has grown well (and it goes from thumb-sized to baseball bat seemingly overnight). The soil in our garden area appears to be really crappy. :O

5. Do you know how to swim?
Yes. Not in an impressive way (I hate to put my face in the water), so I usually dog paddle or do the breaststroke with my head up. OTOH, I can backstroke for days...

Gloomy Day

May. 3rd, 2026 09:24 pm[personal profile] days_unfolding
days_unfolding: (Default)
I stayed up late watching a Mentour Pilot episode about the midair collision in Washington DC. It was a typically good episode.

Had a rare bout of insomnia. Finally got up to have some oatmeal.

Woke up at 8:30 AM, which is too early after falling asleep so late. Napped for three hours. Got the clothes for the concert on the drying rack. Oliver wants food right now. Fed the cats. (The dogs are outside.). Lily didn’t finish her food. I was calling Oliver to finish it, and he was giving me the cat stare. Then I showed him the food, and he came over.

It’s gloomy as hell now, but I checked the grass, and it’s not wet. Oh what the hell. I want to lie down for a little while.

Napped. Read. I’m not going to get out in time to mow the lawn, but I’ll get the mower in the garage. It’s likely to rain soon anyway.

Oh fuck. I have a physical therapy appointment in the morning, so I need clean clothes. I’ll have to throw them in the dryer.

Got the lawnmower in the garage. At least I accomplished something.

Ate dinner. I’m feeding the cats. Oliver wanted to eat Lily’s food but I stopped him. Bella is being a little shit. She ate Gracie’s food as well as her own and stole a cat food can.

I practiced some for my concert. I want to get to bed at a decent hour to be rested for my concert.

Tried "Widow's Bay" on Apple + and it's okay? Kind of mildly amusing, and mildly scary? The first episode wasn't all that compelling. But I may try a few more.

It's a Stephen King style horror - but kind of styled as a comedy? Absurdist comedy? Reminds me of Plurbist (which is apocalyptic horror absurdist comedy). Both are on Apple.

Some example lines from Widow's Bay?

Mayor: Have you heard of the Sea Hag?
Old Crochety Town Story Teller (sings the ditty of the sea hag)
Mayor (at the end of the creepy song): So uhm, how does she kill you exactly?
Old CTST (aka Stephen Root): She crawls into your bed and sits on your face.

Or

NY Times Writer: So, did you have cannibalism in your town's history?
Mayor: No, no that's just a story, I don't know where you got that idea.
Writer: It's on a framed news story in your historical society (he turns to point to the large framed story and exhibit - they are standing in the historical society.)

Read the following blurbs on social media this past week:

If you are in a reader's slump, it may be for other reasons:

* Your brain is overwhelmed and can't handle any more information.
* The books aren't fitting your mood.
* That's not the book your brain wants to deal with right now.

Or? You just don't like those books and need to find a different source for recommendations, preferably not twenty-somethings getting money off of providing marketing content for books geared towards twenty-somethings?

If it were like the 1990s again - with no cell phones, doom scrolling, social media...what is the first thing you'd do?

Go to the movies. Seriously - cell phones ruined movie theaters for me. [Not that they didn't have issues to begin with - but give people a little computer or computer on a watch that they can talk to, text in, and play with? Forget about it.]

Question a Day Meme - May:

1. Have you ever contributed to something being crowdfunded? Was there an incentive to do so?

No. Although I did contribute to an acquaintance's Go Fund Me for cancer treatment once or twice. (She died, so it's not like it necessarily worked? But I guess it helped keep her alive a bit longer...)

2. Have you heard of the ‘Language of Flowers’, published in 1884? Victorian Britain and America were caught up in the concept in the 19th Century. Do you know the secret meaning of any flowers?

Yes, I've heard of it. I don't remember any of it.

3. Have you ever traced any of your family tree?

Yes, I fell down the genealogy rabbit hole a few years ago - traced it back to the 1600s in the Americas and Britain. Got bored. And forgot most of it. That of course didn't prevent various extended family members from doing it? The most famous person I'm related to - appears to be Eisenhower - 9th cousin nine times removed. (See? That's genealogy.)

I'm not sure how accurate most of it is? There's a couple of countries that were good at preserving records of well, just about everybody, and the records weren't destroyed in bombings. Also they weren't in danger of people tracking them down to kill them or enslave them.

Britain, Ireland, and their descendants in the US. Also the Mormons. So if you are British, Irish, British-Canadian, Scottish, or Mormon - you can probably trace it back fairly easily. Germany? Not so much, it was brutally bombed during the first and second World Wars, as was France and a good portion of Western Europe. We also had a lot of records changed or destroyed because of the Holocaust and the Nazis. Scandinavia didn't tend to keep records of anyone who was well not of a certain class.
And good luck hunting accurate records of ancestry if you are Black or Native American descent - those records were destroyed on purpose in the US or altered to protect people from being found and enslaved or killed by armed militias.

****

It's a beautiful but chilly day for spring. In the 40s, looks like the 60s.
Comfortable indoors for a change - in the low 70s. Lots of green outside my window. And blue sky, with streaks of cloud cover. I'm battling a headache and irritability. Have two scheduled doctor's visits next week - PT (vestibular) and lab work, then a doctor's appointment (virtual) the next week and somewhere in there - I have to plug in X-rays. I'm tired of doctor's appointments - I don't think I've had a week off from any of them in a while. I need a vacation from waiting for doctors and going to work.

Making my way slowly through This Kingdom will Not Kill Me - which isn't the book's fault. I can only read it in snatches at home. I can't cart it around with me - it's a hard cover book. It's interesting because it is employing the unreliable narrator tactic. The narrator thinks they know everything about the world they are in and the people in it - because they read the book it's based on? But alas, they don't and get quite a few things wrong. The writer's are slyly commenting on how fans misinterpret the stories they love and read over and over again. Thinking they know everything about it. Or that their interpretation is the correct one. Or their memory of it is right. (It's not, people are human and fallible.)
I may have to re-read the book when I finish it and stuff is revealed.

My reading slump has more to do with system overload than anything else.
But it is what it is.

**

I'm up to date now on From - ie, I can't be spoiled any longer. It's an interesting set-up, but I'm not sure I trust the writers not to go for the shiny/creepy Twilight Zone ending in S5. (ie. Everyone dies and a whole new batch of people enter the town to struggle. I've seen this trope done a few times before. Usually that's how it ends. No one gets out and it just keeps rinsing and repeating itself in an endless frustrating loop.) Maybe I should stop now?

On the other hand, I'm curious. So will probably keep watching until the end. I want to see how quickly they figure out the latest plot development?

Volunteer Day

I forgot to mention that I ordered two rain barrels to arrive on Wednesday. Might as well save some of what falls out of the sky. I need to get my composting bin set up too.

Gracie was crashed out cold on the bed when I went to bed. She got a lot of exercise today.

Woke up at 6:30 AM. I slept on my arm funny, and I think that’s what woke me up. My clothes completely dried on the heated drying rack. Now I know the timing for using it. It’s a chilly morning. Zara is curled up on the heat vent. The dogs want to go back to sleep. Good idea.

Had a nice nap. Ate lunch. I’m feeling draggy but I have volunteer work today because there is a training session tomorrow.

The volunteer session went okay. I’m learning where more books are.

I was running errands and parked the car. For some reason, I turned the steering wheel all the way, and it was stuck and I couldn’t start the car. Shit. So I called AAA. I had to wait an hour for the guy, but it took him about one second to get it loose. Apparently, the trick is to turn the wheel and start the car at the same time.

I followed side streets home from the local grocery store, and it’s a good route for a tricycle. And I could lock the tricycle to the end of the bike rack.

So much for my plans for the evening. I think that I want a nap. Bella came in to nap with me, but Gracie’s still outside.

Napped. Fed the fur faces. I’m tired and want to get moving early.

1. Pleased for the weekend, finally. Got the trash taken out. Did exercises. Slept in - so got the requisite 8 hours. End of a stressful work week. And, I discovered that it takes anywhere between 6-8 weeks to get insurance approval and additional four to order and receive the injection from the pharmacy - for the knee injections. So that doctor's appointment was pushed out to June. Means only PT, lab and maybe X-rays next week.
June's going to be dicey scheduling doc appointments around work.

2. From - I've binged S3 now, which wasn't quite as good as S1-2. S3 has a few really annoying story threads. I'll warn anyone intending to watch this? The last three episodes have a torture sequence that I could have done without. [*Note - it is no where near as bad as the torture sequences in Game of Thrones, and you don't see the torture - just the aftermath. So more implied - than actually watching it? While in Game of Thrones - they actually showed it. So it's nothing like Breaking Bad, Walking Dead, or The Last of Us - mainly because it's on MGM+ and not HBO and AMC. Word to the wise - if you don't like graphic violence and torture steer clear of these types of series on AMC and HBO.] I spoiled myself for it - so at least I knew it was coming and was prepared for it. S1-2 aren't quite as violent and unsavory as S3 (where the writers clearly got bored and decided to get a touch sadistic). Also, S3, suffers greatly from annoying character syndrome or disposable side-character syndrome, replacing some highly likable characters with a few new and highly annoying ones?

The writers have a tendency to show conflict by having various characters explode with rage (yelling at everyone and smashing things) or having mini-temper tantrums, often lashing out at other characters who are either trying to be helpful, or trying to communicate something, or just get them to calm down. No one listens to each other in this show? Communication is a major problem. If they could communicate and listen to each other - they'd probably figure it out and find a way out of the town. But alas, no. (That said? It is realistic. I'll give it that. People really are like that. So, hyper-realistic horror?)

Overslept my alarm until almost 9 AM. My lunchtime nap is being attended by Bella, Oliver, and Lily. I hope that they’ll let me sleep. Overslept my nap. So freaking tired.

The CPAP people were supposed to email my forms yesterday and I still haven’t received them yet. I guess that I’ll give them until Monday and call them back.

I forgot to mention that I found Zara’s adoption papers in the box of papers that I’m going through. Apparently, I adopted her at three years old, not one, so I’ve had her for 14 years. Still a long time.

I also forgot to mention that one of my irises is blooming! I took a picture.
irises.jpeg

Gracie finally came in at 3:30 PM. I discovered that I finally got the grass seed. About time. Speaking of grass, I should get the mower out of the basement tonight and put it into the garage. Then I can mow after volunteering tomorrow.

Oliver and Lily are batting at each other’s paws under the door in Zara’s room. My singing lesson went well.

I finished the Heated Rivalry books except for the new one coming out in June. Now I know the spoilers for the next TV series, but maybe I’ll forget them by then.

My dad said that he wanted to get a tricycle but decided not to because they don’t fit in bike lanes and bike parking spots. I think that I could take side streets to the grocery store, but I need to check out the parking situation.

I think that I want to go to bed early. I’m tired. Gracie is being annoying and refusing to come in. She’s trying to dig something out of the yard. I hope that she comes in before I want to go to sleep.

I managed to avoid running over a snake today, which is a plus. It was around 83F, and they tend to come out in the heat... and then lie on the pavement in the shade. Most of the time, I wind up running over them because I think they're a stick and it's too late to avoid them anyway. :(

This one was not a rattlesnake, thank goodness. And it was a chonk! Wow.

I also saw some turklets. It's that time of year! These were young enough to be cute (which doesn't last long). And I spotted the aftermath of a fish hoping to chomp a black butterfly that was hovering over the river.

Being early May, the wild grape buds are out. They have a sweet, peppery smell that is nothing like actual grapes. The cottonwood trees are also releasing fluff into the air, and that can come and go for a month depending on how often we transition back into winter weather. Soon, squirrel mating season will be running full tilt, and I'll have something else to dodge while biking out there. But in the meantime, I hope the sweetness of spring lingers a little bit longer. :)

I read an ad for a water filter on Facebook that said that energy shortages could affect water supplies. It was trying to scare us and it said that the filters are in short supply, but you can get water filters from REI! I decided that having one (from REI) is not a bad idea though. And I want to get a folding tricycle in case there’s an energy shortage. No, I don’t trust the way things are going. (I do have a bicycle but don’t know how to ride it. And a tricycle would be better for groceries and such.) Actually, a rain barrel is not a bad thing to have too. I can always use it to water the garden.

Overslept. I was scrambling to get myself together for my physical therapy appointment, but I decided to call in sick for the appointment and dental appointment, and I’m going back to sleep. Overslept my nap too. Jammed into the shower in case we needed to appear on camera for the presentation today. (We didn’t.)

The presentation today went well except for a moment of worry because the Zoom meeting was waiting for my boss to log on, who is at a conference in LA. One of my colleagues texted her and she logged on.

Napped after work and way overslept. Fed the fur faces. I’m making myself some food. Ate. I need to go back to bed soon.

Got up around 6:30 AM. Threw myself together and got my blood test done a little after 8. The blood test person asked me which arm, and I said, “Whichever arm in which you can get a good vein.” She said, “Oh, you’re going to be like that.” She found one. I can check that off of my list.

I really want to go back to sleep. Come on, lunchtime. It doesn’t help that Gracie is snoozing in my field of vision. So jealous!

I got my slides done for work last night, so the pressure is off me today.

Called the CPAP people and they’re emailing me some forms to fill out. Made an appointment with Weight Management–for June, sigh.

Way overslept my nap.The dogs had been jumping on me and wrestling before I fell asleep. Maybe I should wake Gracie up whenever she naps upstairs. She’s snoozing now.

Got some file sorting done while Zara was eating because Oliver wasn’t in there. Then he came in and I stopped. Every little bit helps though. I need a box of file folders (ordered).

Cat thermometer. When it’s cold, Lily curls up in the cat bed, which has fleece. When it’s warm, she sprawls out in a box. It’s in-between right now, so first she tried the box and is now in the cat bed. She’s stretched out though. Gotta calibrate!

Oh! No piano tonight. My teacher sent a note because it’s the fifth Wednesday of the month.

I should be able to book the cruise in about a month if I don’t tap my Ally savings. Pink sand beaches, here I come! Oops, two months. Four paychecks.

I’m thinking of driving up to Michigan to get Mom’s stuff in storage the weekend of July 4th. We get the 3rd off, and I can drive up then. I need to check that the storage place will be open on July 4th though. I’d load up the car then and clean out the storage space. Then I’d drive back on Sunday. I need to get Mom’s car fixed by then. Money, money, money.

I finished my latest Heated Rivalry book (the guys wound up in each other’s arms after being idiots) and am waiting for a new one to load in the Kindle on my phone.

Gracie is barking her fool head off.

Got my groceries in. Got my recycling out. I need to get to bed early because I have a physical therapy appointment at 8:35. And then a dental appointment afterward.

Oh ugh. Passports with Trump's face on them. Good thing that mine won't expire for a while.

I'm horribly behind on the Question a Day - April - Meme - so, I'm just going to finish out the month while I have the opportunity. I was going to read more of "This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me" but the vagus nerve associated with my neck is bothering me today - and I'd need to well bend over the book? Had troubles reading on the train for the same reason. It's the weather - which is turning again, and as a result my arthritis is flaring up. (I may go back to audio books - actually, that was why Masq (from ATPOBTVS) started on audio books, back and neck issues.)

22. If you took part in a quiz, what would be your specialist subject?

Probably movies, television, theater and fictional books. I have an insane amount of trivia knowledge in that arena. For some reason or other, my brain holds onto that sort of data? When I played Jeopardy on my phone - every time it did that category - I won. Same with Trivia pursuit.

23. In 1895, Ngaio Marsh, New Zealand detective writer and producer, was born in Christchurch, New Zealand. Have you ever read any of her detective novels? If not, who is your favourite detective novelist?

Yes, a couple. It's been a long time since I read them though - and I get her confused with PD James (who I prefer and have read more of). Neither are my favorite. My favorite is the Master - Agatha Christie. I read all of her books. I did find Peters Vicky Bliss mysteries up to and including The Night Train to Memphis - to be fun and memorable. I always wished those novels had been adapted in a series or movies. But alas, no.

I also loved Minette Walters, another British mystery writer - whose first novel was adapted. Not sure any others were. She would be a close second to Agatha Christie.

24. It’s Barbara Streisand’s birthday – are you a fan of her music or movies?

I didn't realize she was born in April. So is my niece and brother. Fan? Not really? I'm not sure I'd call myself a fan exactly? I enjoy her music and her movies. Like her music better - she has an amazing range. One of the original belters. Her movies are a mixed bag, unfortunately. But I have enjoyed several of them. Her better ones were when she was younger...

She's the same age as my mother and Harrison Ford.

25. When’s the last time you had to use a plumber?

I can't remember? I always call the Super, and they tend to fix the problem if I can't.

26. Do you still have a landline, or do you only use your mobile phone/cellphone?

Yes. Although not sure why - since it's not really a landline but through a cable bundle? Phone, cable and internet. It does make the other two cheaper, but it would probably be cheaper just to have the internet. I just don't want to deal with figuring out how to return the equipment.

27. What sweets/candies do you remember from your childhood? When was the last time you ate some?

Butterfingers, Kit Kats, 3 Musketeers, Big Chew Gum, those sour balls that you can suck for hours and they change flavors and colors, sweet tarts, colored sugar in straws (can't remember the name of it)...

I had a 3 Musketeers about a year ago. The rest, I can't eat any longer - too much sugar or they have gluten. Kit Kats are a thing of the past - I can't have them at all. Butterfingers are possible - but high in sugar, as are all the rest.

I don't know what I did? But sugar got angry at me. So did gluten. And here we are.

28. In 2004, Shrek the sheep from Tarras, Central Otago, New Zealand, was finally shorn live on TV after 6 years of avoidance; the fleece weighed 27 kg (60 lb). Do you own, or have you made anything from sheep’s wool?

There's a sheep named Shrek? Oh that's hilarious. Did they name it after the movie Shrek?

Yes, I have wool - not a lot, I find it itchy. But I have wool sweaters. I even have a knitted wool blanket. At least I think it is wool - it might be alpaca.

29. When was the last time you received a letter (not junk mail)?

God knows. I've no clue. I miss letters. I think it might have been five years ago - from my mother? She has sent me cards - do those count? The rest of the family uses Facebook or Texts.

And my penpals are on social media now.

30. In 2018, Sweden's official Twitter account confirmed that Swedish meatballs actually originated in Turkey. Do you like Swedish meatballs? Ever had them in IKEA?

Yes. My mother used to make them a lot - with rice. But I can't have them now - because they contain gluten. I suppose you could make them without?
But I've also kind of limited red meat intake - because it doesn't agree with me any longer. So, I eat it sparingly, if at all.

I should have put that under a cut, but I didn't feel like it. It's been one of those days.

Today I finally "attempted" to schedule my X-rays, only to be reminded of why I was procrastinating?

So I call the Trinity location in Manhattan.
hell is scheduling x-rays )

Oh well, if it doesn't work - I'll try Lennox Hill in Cobble Hill, which has openings on weekends. I just hate their portal and it's difficult to share with other doctors.

I'm worried about my vagus nerve - which apparently affects the gut and the head, and causes all sorts of issues if out of wack.

So, I gave up on Firebird and went over to Scalzi's Locked-In (I may go back to Firebird, not sure yet.) John Scalzi is kind of the Stephen King of Sci-Fi writing. Read more... )

Book Instagram is odd? Very young. And kind of whiny? Apparently book reviews and book blogging has been replaced with book podcasting?? Where everybody and their mother gives book reviews via podcasts. Some of them are paid to do this? Why? Read more... )

Woke up at 7 AM. Let the dogs out and went back to sleep. It’s a nice sunny day.

Bella came inside at 10 AM. I think that she wants a nap. Gracie is out lying in the mud, sigh.

It occurred to me that I should bring in a recycling bin when I watch Zara eat and go through some boxes of papers.

Oliver was snuggling up to Bella! They were even playing for a while, but then Bella got too rough. I took Oliver out of the room. Napped and overslept.

Gracie wanted to come in at 1:30 PM! She was waiting for me to open the door. I guess that she’s tired. Yeah, she’s out cold.

I really want to take a nap after work, but I need to get up early for a blood test tomorrow morning. I might have to finish up some work too (done).

Well, Project Go Through Papers didn’t go very well in Zara’s room. Oliver took advantage of my distraction to eat some of Zara’s food. Maybe a better plan is to watch Zara eat and then work on a box for a few minutes afterwards.

Fed the cats and myself. Gathered the garbage to go out. I started cleaning out the refrigerator, which sorely needs it. I’ll roll the can out after the dogs come in (done). Fed the dogs. Wrote myself a big note not to eat tomorrow morning for my blood test. I think that I’ll wend towards bed and read a while.
