So I will write something about Dresden with photos...;)
Well the journey was quite long - we did go by car - obviously more tiring for poor Dirk than for me! The hotel was ok, I wasn't quite happy about its location though as you had to take a bus and then a tram to get to the centre. Would have preferred something a bit closer, or something on the other side of the bridge in the nice villagey area ;). It was a boring building too but it was ok, it was clean and quiet, no problems with drunks in the corridors. I think it is a hotel favoured by senior coach tours. ;)

Here is the room

They gave us complimentary gummibears (which I can't eat as a vegetarian) and 'Russian Bread' which are sweet crackers, and which I don't like. Oh well...no tea making stuff there, there was a mini bar though but we did not take anything from it.
Well the first evening we did go into the Old Town to have a look around...

So beautiful! Mostly rebuilt after the war, but they did a good job.
We went in the Pulverturm restaurant, which Dirk had visited before and apparently liked - ok it's rather touristy but it was fun and the food was pretty good. The Eierschecke cake in particular ;) it also included the recipe on the napkin so Dirk has kept that - wow a very rich cake though!
here is a photo of the inside of the restaurant..

We had a good walk around the next day and went to the Old Masters gallery and the Porcelain gallery, also visited the Zwinger castle which is nice to walk around. More photos

The Zwinger from above on its terrace that you can walk around - all of this is open. The Old Master gallery is in one of the buildings and so is the porcelain one, there was another museum that used to be in there too but no longer is and otherwise I'm not sure

I do like playing with the Diorama setting on my camera sometimes ;)

One of the signs that Dresden used to be in East Germany. This was called the Art Palace and it looks like it's empty now, so I think they will probably knock it down eventually like they did with the similar one in Berlin. But I don't know. Other than that, the neighbourhood we walked through one dark night was quite creepy with quite Communist looking buildings that seemed to be half empty, with just a few of the flats in them occupied, there was also the Stasi building that we did go past on the tour bus, and also, when we were sitting at outside seating of a restaurant a deaf man laid down a crappy looking toy with a note saying to leave 2 Euros to buy it from him - I have come across this in Russia and Poland quite often on trains, but never Germany before - Dirk had not come across that before and was a bit surprised, whereas I knew what was happening - I've never seen anyone actually buy those toys mind you. It's always deaf people.
We ate out at several different places - one evening we tried to get a seat here just cos it was Canadian -

Hee hee but we didn't get a table there. We ended up going to an Australian place which turned out not to be much good. I knew it would be touristy, but I guess I thought an Australian place would have decent sized portions, but no, we got really small scoops of veggie lasagne so that was disappointing. I also told Dirk to please not order any kangaroo meat, I would tell that to anyone as the way they are hunted is unethical - this page explains it.
These were street artists we saw one evening, though we only saw the end of their show

And this is the synagogue - the building on the left - I should really have arranged to try to go to a service but I didn't think of it!
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
For those of you who aren't Jewish, you can't just GO to a service at a synagogue where you aren't known, for the most part, you generally have to contact someone there first for security reasons. How secure they are depends on the synagogue and where it is, I guess.
I didn't think much of the building from the outside but apparently inside it's supposed to look like a tent which sounded interesting.
did you go to a service there, [personal profile] lethargic_man?

Anyway...this guy was really funny. :D he was totally not talented but he cheered me up so I gave him a Euro. I was the first person to give him any money at all so he was very happy :D
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Dirk did not understand why I gave him money ;) but we Brits like eccentric people. ;)

This photo is from the Kunst Cafe Antik which is basically a cafe in an antique shop, which [livejournal.com profile] meathiel told me about :D I loved it there :D we went there twice! The veggie options were pretty pathetic but it's a nice place for tea and cake. ;) And the baked potato I had there was fine, it's just that the options were pathetic. I think in general Dresden is ok for veggies and there are even apparently a couple of vegan places but we didn't end up going there as I wasn't sure where they were and we didn't get round and about THAT much. So the places we went didn't have a lot of veggie options but were ok.

This is just a weird photo I got of some coloured fountains

Anyway, we visited a couple more museums and then I wanted to go on the hop on hop off tour bus. Dirk wasn't too sure about it but he ended up quite enjoying it and the first time we went on the whole tour, then the next day we just went on part and got on and off where we wanted - it only cost €2 each to go on it again the next day. It took us across the Blue Wonder bridge to a more villagey sort of area which I really liked a lot. This is us in a cafe/bakery there - Cafe Wippler which we just happened upon but apparently a friend of ours from the Deine Lakaien forum, who goes to Dresden quite often as she is from Leipzig, really likes it there!
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Yes, we did take The Dackel...
These are some shops near the cafe

And we went up the hill on the Schwebebahn, which is a suspended train, this is it

a view from up there

We also found a Trabi up at the top!
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We took the bus a bit farther down the road and had lunch on a terrace next to a castle that apparently had belonged to a man who created a mouthwash!
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
The view from there was great

And it seemed like a place where there were fewer tourists and more actual Dresden people. It seemed like the tourists tended to stick to the Old Town, even though the hop on hop off bus did go out to this place. There were some who came to the castle too but they seemed all to be German at least.
Oh here's another silly pic of The Dackel...

We did go to Meissen on the way back as well, we visited the visitor's centre there and went on a tour (with a slightly strange tour guide who wore a really manky looking fur waistcoat that made her look like a cavewoman, but at least she was easy to understand...), here are some photos from there...
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
We saw the craftspeople doing each part of the process of making the Meissen objects. Here she is modelling the smaller parts. There was also a man doing the modelling of pots etc with a wheel, and two artists doing the painting. Quite interesting to see it all.
We also went in the cafe there of course, got served on Meissen porcelain there of course.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
He was quite good ;)
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We did buy ourselves one very small vase just so we had SOMETHING from there...it is very precious so I hope we don't manage to break it!!!
Oh and here is the Dackel on the way backOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
We did have a really nice trip there and I hope we will go again sometime, I think we will as Dirk loves it. We are now both back to work though tomorrow is a bank holiday here, but I am working anyway!
