So as those of you on facebook know we went to Opel Zoo today...well, the weather wasn't the greatest for it and I haven't been feeling well today at all, but it was still quite a nice visit. It's a nice zoo apart from where the elephants are!!! They are renovating their area but right now it looks like an industrial building site with elephants. But otherwise it's quite ok, well I think a few of the enclosures are still a bit small, like the porcupines, that seemed a bit ridiculous, more like a cabinet, but others are ok and some animals are not out now because it is a bit cold for them (like the meercats so we didn't see them).
Anyway...we got some photos...

[livejournal.com profile] galahadthea's favourite, the northern ibis or Waldrapp in German ;) well it was the first time I'd seen them since she was mentioning them at least - I am not sure if I have seen them before or not, but there were several there. :)

cheetah of course - cheetahs always remind me of when I visited Toronto Zoo with my nephews - the older one Cormac was only 2 then but SO amazingly clever and could speak so well - anyway we saw a cheetah there and some little kid was saying 'kitty, kitty' and his mother said 'yes there is a kitty' - and Cormac spoke up 'Actually it's a cheetah'! hee hee ;) My sister and I both agree that ahem certain mothers who think it's somehow EASIER not to teach their kids the proper names of zoo animals but just call them something familiar - like 'kitty' for a cheetah - ARE IDIOTS...Cormac was a very clever little guy anyway BUT my sister did teach him the names of all the animals there and didn't try to simplify.

And the poor old elephants in their industrial wasteland...it was funny though...you could buy carrots at the zoo to feed to some of the animals and Dirk was throwing them at the elephant on the right - except that guy never managed to catch any of the carrots in his mouth, they all dropped on the ground and the one on the left picked them up with his trunk!
There are red pandas at this zoo too and we did see them but they were curled up high on trees so I couldn't have got a good photo. ;)
